Fremont Street Experience lights up downtown
Looking for an illuminating experience in downtown on Las Vegas? The famed Fremont Street Experience should do the job, with 12.5 million synchronized LED bulbs, 180 computer-programmed high-intensity strobe lights and eight robotic mirrors per block that can be individually programmed to pan and tilt to reflect light.
It’s all designed to help you see the light where entertainment in Downtown Las Vegas is concerned — spectacular computer-generated sound-and-light shows that 25,000 people flock to see daily.
The light display is encased in a domed Viva Vision canopy 90 feet wide and 1,500 feet long (the length of five football fields). Since its 1995 debut, the Fremont Street Experience has also brought a brighter outlook to the historic downtown area (the original Las Vegas Strip).
The components of these displays, which include 555,000 watts of concert quality music and sound, make up a modern technological and engineering marvel that lays claim as the largest graphics display system in the world.
The display canopy towers 90 feet above a four-block section of Fremont Street between Main and Fourth Streets. On it, visitors can enjoy spectacular sound and light shows such as the signature-style "Lucky Vegas;" "Bad to the Bone," a motorcycle ride with the “bad boys of rock,” and the seductive show "Fahrenheit at Night."
There are also tributes to Queen, featuring "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" and to Kiss with productions of "Lick It Up," "Shout It Out Loud" and "Rock 'n' Roll All Night." New shows are created every year.
Having undergone a $17 million renovation in 2004, the Fremont Street Experience now has a resolution 10 times higher resolution than it did a decade ago. It can produce 16.7 million different light combinations and has a library of 15 shows.
Under its high dome, the five-block-long Frenmont Street Experience creates a pedestrian mall closed to traffic that encompasses 10 downtown casinos, including the famed Golden Nugget.
It has transformed Fremont Street into a “people place” that offers a blend of urban theater, sound-and-light shows, 60 restaurants, specialty retail and nightlife opportunities.
During the warmer months, there are outdoor free concerts and other entertainment. on two stages. There are also special seasonal and holiday shows and events. .
The light-and-sound show is free.
