Round up your hound dogs and put on your blue suede shoes — Elvis is back in the building.

In this case, it’s Planet Hollywood, inside the Steve Wyrick Theater located in the Miracle Mile Shops. “The King” is back in the persona of acclaimed tribute artist Trent Carlini and his show Elvolution, and it looks like he’ll be staying a while.

That’s because it’s more than bricks and mortar that separates Carlini from others of his ilk. The winner of the $100,000 Grand Prize on the TV show “The Next Best Thing,”  Carlini's tribute early on attracted the attention of Elvis’ “Memphis Mafia” — including Joe Esposito, Elvis’ 17-year manager and close friend, who has appeared periodically in Carlini’s shows.

“I met all of Elvis’ clan separately — Joe in 1995; Al Dvorin in 1998 —  he coined the phrase ‘Elvis has left the building’; Jerry Schelling in 2000; J.D. Sumner in 1990 (Sumner died in the mid-90s); the Jordannaires in 1989, and D.J. Fontana, who was Elvis’ drummer in the 50s, in 1990,” says Carlini.

“They had heard so much about me that they came to see my show at different times and came backstage and introduced themselves; I even performed with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps in 1992.”

Carlini performs all seven stages of Elvis’ career, singing 20 of the icon’s hits complete with a band, backup singers, and costume changes. After 16 years as an Elvis impersonator, Carlini has internalized the charismatic singer's vocal technique, movements and facial expressions as second nature.

Carlini bears an uncanny natural physical resemblance to Elvis, but it's his passion for it that he feels puts him on another level. In his 90-minute show, Carlini performs every era of Elvis, from the icon’s gold lamé jacket stage and his Army days to his movies, his 1968 comeback special and finally his long-term stint at the Las Vegas Hilton in the 1970s.
